Mathematics is one of an important subjects that the children have to learn in school. Most of the children in Brunei, either in Primary or in Secondary school, found that Mathematics is a difficult subject to learn and it is boring. From my experience teaching Mathematics subject for 4 years, we as a teacher needed to prepare the lesson using concrete materials or teaching aids so that the students are interested in learning the subjects as well as understand the concepts better if they had experienced the hands-on activities .
As stated in the SPN 21, it emphasis on teaching Mathematics using various types of learning strategies, problem solving and mental computation. For example, we need to teach the students to discover some of the rules or formula (i.e. area of rectangle) by themselves before teaching them the formula of the rectangle. So, teacher plays an important role in teaching Mathematics to the students.
Furthermore, with the use of technology in teaching Mathematics will enhance the students' learning as well as achievements and makes the lesson more interactive and enjoyable. Many web based resources (one of it is www.mathis fun.com) can be used to review and practice the Mathematical concept. For example, when teaching about Geometry, there is a site where it allows the students to explore the properties of various geometric solids, such as the number of faces, edges and vertices. Games are also very motivational for the students. They will be eager to participate and gain better understanding of the concepts through playing games. Students who have extra needs also have the opportunity to extend their mathematics learning.
